ParaNorman: Review

I went to see ParaNorman in 3D with a group of friends last Sunday. Here is my review:

I really liked it! The look of the film and the execution of the animation was superb, the story was interesting and the characters were fun and entertaining. The design work on the film was really spectacular, I love how there’s an apparent lack of symmetry in everything including the character’s faces, it really helps enhance the creepy-cool feel of the whole flick. The attention to detail that the people at Laika put into the construction of the film just blew me away, like the sub-surface scattering on Norman’s ears and the look of his sister’s lip gloss.

There was some really interesting stuff going on as far as cinematography as well, like close-up shots of feet walking (something that is almost never done in stop motion) and the shot where the parents are arguing and we only see their stomachs and Norman’s head, it was something I’d never seen before. And I really liked the scenes at the end during the confrontation with the witch, the visual effects meshed really well with the stop motion and just looked really cool.

The only thing I didn’t love about the movie was the 3D; it was very inconsistent. Some shots looked really good with nice roundness on the characters and a nice sense of scale and other shots looked totally flat and compressed. There were a few instances when I thought maybe the 3D projector had stopped working correctly because there were a few scenes that seemed to have no depth at all.

So maybe it’s not worth the price for the 3D ticket, but I would definitely recommend seeing it in 2D while it’s still in theaters.

What We’ve Been Watching

Romantics-Anonymous Secret of Nimh
howimetyourmother Prometheus
Ken Burns-The National Parks tangled
1.      Romantics Anonymous: Very cute French film. Love this film!

2.      The Secret of Nimh: I somehow missed this movie when I was a kid. Watching it now, I think it’s kind of scary! There’s some pretty amazing animation in it though.

3.      How I Met Your Mother: This is what we watch when we’re killing time during lunch or want to watch something quick during dinner. I like it, but Brian hasn’t gotten into it yet.

4.      Prometheus: I’ve never seen any of the Alien films, but everyone I know was super psyched about this, so I went to see it. It was fantastic! Left a lot of unanswered questions though…

5.      The National Parks: America’s Best Idea: Brian loves this documentary. He’s been watching it non-stop for weeks! I can’t really get into it though, I think it’s kind of boring…

6.      Tangled: Re-watched this last weekend. I love the horse in this movie, he’s so well animated! My favorite scene is the one where Maximus and Flynn are both trying to get to his satchel and end up falling off a cliff.

The Hunger Games: Movie Review

We went to see The Hunger Games last weekend. I haven’t read the books, but I did download a free sample of the first chapter of The Hunger Games to my Kindle. I liked what I read, but if I read the book before I see the movie I end up saying “it didn’t happen that way in the book” throughout the entire film and annoying the crap out of the person next to me. So as someone who did not read the books, here is my review.
I really, really liked it. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go out and do so. It is a little longer than it needs to be (the editing could have been tightened up towards the middle of the film) and it reminded me a lot of Battle Royale, but I was totally taken in by it. It also made me want to take up archery as a hobby, an effect that, I imagine, will also be seen in teenage girls over the next five years.
